St Hugh's Remembers

You are here:

We held our Remembrance Service in our Remembrance Garden.

The focus was  Passchendaele which marked its 100th anniversary this year. The Battle of Passchendaele, fought between 31st July and 6th November 1917, is sometimes called the Third Battle of Ypres. For the soldiers who fought at Passchendaele, it was known as the 'Battle of Mud'. For the sake of a few kilometres, the British lost 310,000 men and the Germans 260,000 men.

We lit up to remember a dark past

All students placed a tea light in the Remembrance garden at the end of the service to remember a dark past.

John Gallagher from the Royal Hospital Chelsea joined us again and the Reverend Marian Toyne  officiated the service. David Atkinson played the Last Post and Reveille. The local T.A. centre will also sent six representatives. Students and staff took part with a reading and  letters from the trenches.
